Coffee and chicory is a New Orleans tradition that goes back over a century. Most people know the style from one or two dominant brands — dark roast, heavy chicory, strong and bitter. The Roch Blend takes a completely different approach.
Kevin chose Nebraska-grown chicory instead of the French chicory used in most traditional blends. Nebraska chicory is less harsh and more caramelized, which means it adds sweetness and depth rather than bitterness. The coffee itself is a medium roast — what the industry calls a foil city roast, lighter than what you would expect in a coffee-and-chicory blend.
The result has cocoa notes from the coffee and a caramelized sweetness from the chicory. It is smooth where most coffee-and-chicory is sharp. For people who love the tradition but have been put off by the heaviness of other blends, the Roch Blend is a different experience entirely.
The blend is named for the St. Roch neighborhood where CR Coffee was born. Best served as a cafe au lait — half coffee, half hot milk — the way New Orleans has always done it. Available at all three locations and online for shipping.
